Spring Cleaning your Makeup bag

When was the last time you took a critical look inside your Makeup bag? Be honest. We often skip over taking a quick minute to unveil the horror of month-old cotton buds amidst the cloud of loose powder residue. While hoarding our beloved beauty products past the recommended usage date may not be life threatening, we should still be aware of how old a product is, especially when it come to water-based products like foundations, creams, mascaras and even cream blushers.

Here is a list to help you Spring Clean your Makeup bag so you don't have to ask yourself the question, "How long is too long?".

Lipsticks - While lipsticks are not water based, it is the lip brush you use that can potentially hold a lot of threatening germs. It is recommended to wash your lip brush once a month. Try using Johnson's baby shampoo as a gentle cleanser for the brush. It is mild and contains antimicrobials. Lip products should be treated the same as a mascara - they are both a NO sharing zone. Typical lifespan of lipstick after opening is 2 years.

Skin Products - Take the time to inspect your favorite foundations and skin products on a regular basis. If it has a different smell or has started to separate it is definitely time to re-stock. Also, consider if you use your hands to apply your skin care products, as dirty hands can result in dirty products. We recommend investing in a foundation brush to help keep your products hygienic. Typical lifespan after opening is 12 months.

Eye Products - In this cosmetic area it is especially vital to stay on top of how long you are using your products and in what circumstances. Mascaras should not be kept for longer than two months due to the bacteria breeding ground that is on the wand. For eyeliners we recommend switching to gel based eyeliners to help avoid eye bacteria from spreading throughout an eye pencil and making consistent contact with your eyes. If an eye pencil is preferred then make sure you sharpen it prior to each use. Mascara life span after opening is 3 months. Eye pencil life span after opening is 2 years. Eye shadow life span after opening is 2 years.

Brushes - The constant use of Makeup brushes can cause Makeup residue, dust and debris to build up and form a layer of bacteria on your brushes. That layer of bacteria is constantly being transferred between your face, brush and products. It is important to regularly clean your brushes. Consistent cleaning can also increase the longevity of your Makeup brushes. Try using Johnson's baby shampoo once a month on your brushes. 

Makeup Bag - Aim to clean your Makeup bag every 3-6 months. Remember, bacteria thrives in warm conditions, making your Makeup bag a perfect hideaway. Try to opt for a fabric bag that can be easily thrown in the washing machine. Or look for a Makeup bag that can be wiped out carefully with an antibacterial wipe.

"I did not let cancer define me or take what I love from me"

Want some guidance from someone who has truly "walked the walk"? Meet Libbie, Valerie and Nicole. They are a mother/daughter team and are offering us their sage advice. They know more than just a little something about breast cancer, because they have had a very personal fight against this disease. Two of them were diagnosed with breast cancer and have undergone surgeries, chemo and radiation. And one was not going to let cancer eventually take control of her life based off of her strong hereditary chance to get this disease, so she underwent preventative surgeries. This is what they have to say:

Question: What would be your advice to someone who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer?

"I would tell people that you cannot 'fix this' yourself. Let others in. Trust in the Lord and count all your many blessings. I would also tell them to find the best doctors, ones that they feel comfortable with. Trust in them, but also be an active participant in the decisions that are being made and if you don't feel right about something to speak up."

"Keep your head up! It's shocking and discouraging but it doesn't' mean 'the end'. Know that it will be hard, but you can do it!"

"It is important to talk to the people you know because chances are there are several people that they know who are going through the same thing. I have been able to help several people find answers that they were seeking because I was willing to share what I was going through. Also, attitude is EVERYTHING! A good attitude can make this process so much easier and can help you heal MUCH faster!"

Question: What is something you are most proud of during your breast cancer journey?

"I am proud of the education I have learned of so many things. I have learned that there are so many good people who love and care about others, including me. These people are family, friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and even strangers. It has taught me to believe in the goodness of mankind. And reaffirmed that as I try to serve others that I do not think of my own problems and I am happier. Other personal lessons I have learned is to delegate, after years of being really bad at it. I've learned to relax and take time to appreciate everything and everyone around me, and to count and enjoy all my blessings. I gained the ability to accept the outcome of what I delegated and not let it drive me crazy when it didn't get done the way I would have done it. I am proud of the peace I have found through this ordeal. To have faith in the Lord's plan and time table…Come what may…and love it!"

"I am proud that I didn't let this diagnoses 'define' me. I can remember shortly after my diagnoses my Mom and I went to the drugstore and bought a big pill container - you know the one that has M-F a.m. on one side and the p.m. on the other side. I looked at the container and I said, "I don't want this. It says REALLY OLD or SICK and I am not old and I am not sick. I just have something I have to do - an obstacle to overcome." This is how I felt and the mentality that I carried - I'm not sick, I just have some challenges to get through. Yes, there were times due to the chemo when I was very sick. I had to leave my home, my husband and my 2 children and let my Mom and Dad take care of me. But when that week of being sick was over, I went right back to life. I went home and I cooked dinner when I could, I spent time with my husband, and I took care of my kids. I did not let cancer define me or take what I love from me."

"I wasn't diagnosed with breast cancer, but I am very proud that I made the decision to be aggressive and take control of my life before breast cancer took control of it. My risk was pretty high so I made the decision to go ahead with the bi-lateral mastectomy even though my health wasn't immediately at risk."

These women are great examples of not just surviving, but living a full life with a positive attitude. Thank you for your gems of wisdom! 

How do you properly expose yourself?

Do you hate sunscreen? Do you often forget to apply sunscreen, even on the days when you don't think you'll be outside that much?

Getting a sunburn is something most have dealt with at some point in their life. It's not fun. Getting a healthy dose of sun and Vitamin D is important to your health. It's proven to help strengthen muscles, stop respiratory infections, and boost bone mass. The recommended sunscreen-free exposure depends on your individual skin tone, but on average it's about 15 to 30 minutes, a few times a week. And that's it! After that amount of time it is critical to apply your sunscreen.

We all know the risks of sun exposure…a sunburn! But the consequences of a sunburn can be more severe and long term. Many assume the wrinkles, dark spots and other characteristics of unhealthy skin are the product of aging. Unfortunately the main cause of unhealthy skin is the damaging effects of sun exposure over a number of years. Accelerated aging of the skin and even skin cancer are common risks of frequent unprotected exposure to the sun.

Did you know your skin is your largest organ of your body? Let's take care of it and protect it daily. Start with wearing a medical grade sunscreen DAILY. Medical grade sunscreens will sit on your skin, not seep in, to help prevent absorption of unwanted chemicals found in other drug-store purchased chemical sunscreens. Look for a sunscreen that contains at least 2-3% zinc oxide. Using a medical grade sunscreen WITH a built-in daily moisturizer is a great way to help you remember to apply it every day.

Even a simple, moderately severe sunburn has shown to damage blood vessels extensively. How extensively? Studies have shown that it can take four to fifteen months for them to return to their normal condition. Consider that the next time you're feeling too lazy to apply sunscreen before heading outside.

Facial Contouring and Liposuction

If your facial features aren’t as well defined or youthful as you’d like them to be—whether it’s because of aging or simply due to heredity—you may want to consider facial contouring with liposuction. With liposuction, fat is broken up and removed through a very narrow tube (a “cannula”) that’s connected to a suction device. Skin Care

It is always important to take care of your skin, but during the summer skin care becomes crucial. We put our bodies through a lot, but our skin, the body’s largest organ, inevitably faces damage over the years. During the summer the sun’s UV rays are extra harsh and paired with more time spent outdoors, skin care is even more vital. Most people apply sunscreen before spending excessive time outside, but there are other important, often overlooked steps of skin care that will keep your skin healthy and vibrant. 

Hydrate

Everyone knows the recommended serving of 8 eight-ounce glasses of water a day, but hydration is paramount during the summer.  Water allows the skin and body to detoxify and also maintains the balance of moisture in the skin. In addition, not drinking water during the summer can cause internal dehydration, dizziness and headaches.  

Apply 

Almost everyone applies sunscreen before swimming, but what about before running errands or exercising outdoors? Applying sunscreen, at least to the face, should become part of your morning routine during the summer. The delicate skin on the face is more susceptible to sunburn as well as future damage to the skin including wrinkles, sun spots and even potential skin cancer. For the best protection, only use sunscreen that is at least 15 SPF or higher as well as water resistant. 

Exfoliate

Using an exfoliating face scrub or body wash cleans out pores and removes dead skin cells. Not only will exfoliating give you softer, clearer skin, but it can also improve your skins hydration. Make sure after exfoliating you apply adequate sunscreen, exfoliated skin is even more susceptible to sun damage.

Exercise increases blood flow and cellular debris is flushed out, essentially cleaning the skin from the inside. The Exciting Procedure of Fat Transfer

Fat can be a good thing?  According to Dr. Mark Jensen, it definitely can!  As a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Jensen says that fat “is like liquid gold.”  When transferred from a problem area to somewhere else that needs correction, fat becomes the perfect tool for many reconstructive procedures. 

What it does

Because fat is a natural substance, it is an excellent tool to work with when doing reconstructive surgery.  The surgeon can remove fat from a problem area, like the stomach or hips, and transfer it to the breasts or face (the two most common transfer areas).  Fat transfers effectively smooth, lift, and rejuvenate areas degraded by sickness or old age.

The Mammogram Controversy

New Controversy from Canadian 25 year study of Mammography

The British Journal of Medicine recently published an update on the Canadian Mammography study.

This new study casts doubts on the usefulness of mammograms for preventing breast cancer deaths. For those women who dread the painful and awkward visit to the doctor’s office every year, this comes as great news!  But how is the rest of the medical community welcoming these findings?  Well, with a lot of debate. 

This kind of debate over cancer screening is not new. In fact, it has gone on for years for nearly every type of cancer-screening test. But what is the verdict for mammograms? Do we keep them or boot them?  Before we come to any conclusions, we first need to understand the purpose of a screening test.

An ideal screening test would:

1.       Find cancer early

2.       Prevent death

3.       Not hurt you

4.       Be cheap

5.       Be readily available

6.       Be simple to perform

So how does mammography stack up? Let’s find out!

Do they find cancer early?

Generally speaking, yes. Mammograms can find tumors so small they are undetectable by touch. They can also detect cancer at an early stage before it beings to spread. This, obviously, makes treatment much easier.  So, one point in favor of mammograms.

Do they prevent death?

This is the crux of the debate stemming from this new study. After following 100,000 women in Canada for 25 years, (half had mammograms and half did not), they found that the death rate from breast cancer was nearly identical. This result sure makes mammogram-haters happy.

But of course, mammograms do save lives by detecting cancer early.  The thing is, these new findings suggest that regular breast exams pick up tumors early enough for successful treatment as well.  Also, it appears that treatments have been improving in effectiveness, preventing death in more advanced cases of breast cancer.   

Do mammograms hurt you?

Technically, yes – they could. There are two ways that mammograms may hurt you besides the obvious pain associated with squeezing the breast.

First, doctors worry that the small doses of radiation used in mammograms may actually cause cancer. Second, false positives subject women to needless biopsies and surgery (not to mention stress and financial burden). The Canadian study found that of the 50,000 who had mammograms, roughly 140 of them were falsely diagnosed.

The big question is – do these harms actually outweigh the benefits?  So far, most professionals don’t think so.

Are mammograms cheap?

At a cost of about 100 dollars per exam, it doesn’t sound too expensive. But when you consider that 37 million mammograms are performed in the U.S. each year at a cost of 3.7 billion dollars, the cost seems astronomical!  Could that money be put to better use?  Maybe, maybe not.  

Is it readily available?

There have been great efforts in the U.S. to make mammograms available. Nearly every health care system is equipped with mammography equipment and skilled radiologists to interpret the findings.  Great strides have been made to ensure access for everyone, including low-income patients and the un-insured. 

Are mammograms simple to perform?  

This one is all up to personal opinion.

What is the consensus?

While the debate rages on, The American Cancer Society, The American Board of Surgery, Cancer.org, Mayo Clinic and nearly every large medical group in the U.S. still recommend yearly mammogram screening after age 40. 

However, these organizations are calling for an expert panel to review the new data. There seems to be a number of quality studies that support both sides.  We’ll just have to wait and see how the debate ensues.

So what should women do in the meantime?  Well, better safe than sorry!  Get a mammogram until you hear otherwise.

Keeping It Real: Be Honest with Your Plastic Surgeon
